Mixed Flower Containers- Planters

I was able to snap a few photos of some planters that I've been planting the last week around town. These Part Shade Mixed Containers are along the Fox River in Downtown Geneva, IL.

I love the way these turned out!

They should fill in quite nicely and cascade over the edge of the pot.

A Fox Tail Fern is perfect because it is planted right next to the Fox River :-)

I love the way the colors blend beautifully with the brick and shutters!

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. Pay tribute to our men and women who served our country in military service. Many people observe this holiday or remember a fallen loved-one by visiting cemeteries, memorials or displaying red white and blue planters. Our family will BBQ and finally get our tomatoes planted in our garden. I have three brothers who proudly serve our country and my thoughts and prayers will be with them. Whatever you do, please take a moment to think of all the lives that have been lost to fight for our country. And think of all the men and woman that are currently stationed far away from their families.

Teeny Tiny Woodland Winter Mixed Containers & a NEW piece from Diana McNish!

This cute little table top garden is in the beginning stages of being transformed for the Christmas Walk. I love making these tiny Winter mixed containers- They are just adorable. And a miniature garden is incomplete without a tea party. So, through the arbor gates there is a bistro table with a holly tea set and desert for two. Tomorrow, I will add wreaths, fence, roping, miniature white lights, and more.

I also stopped by Diana McNish's home today and picked up a fabulous piece and brought it to our shop. He is Wonderful! Matilda will get a warm coat and scarf and they both will be set for our Christmas open house this Friday and Saturday.

Homemade Pumpkin Soup Recipe

Perfect for your pumpkin, onion, and garlic harvest!

Homemade Pumpkin Soup

4 cups of pumpkin puree ( save seeds for toasted pumpkin seeds ) fresh or canned
6 large carrots
1 onion
olive oil
3 cloves of garlic
1 Fresh rosemary large sprig ( strip needles off and chopped) or tablespoon dried rosemary chopped
1 tsp crushed sage
1/2 tsp crushed marjoram
pinch of dried ancho pepper to taste
1 can organic coconut milk
2 quarts organic chicken broth/ stock
sea salt and black pepper

Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Cut carrots, garlic cloves and onions in chunks and spread on baking pan. Sprinkle with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper. Mix and roast in oven for 30 minutes.

Add above mixture to large soup pot with 1 quart of chicken stock, sage, dried ancho pepper, and marjoram. Bring to boil and cook for about 25 minutes or until carrots are soft. Add pumpkin, coconut milk, and the other quart of chicken broth. Mix with hand blender.

Serve hot and enjoy! Salt and pepper to taste and top with toasted pumpkin seeds (optional )

And, even though the sun hid behind the clouds, customers came out and a good time was had by all. We want to thank everyone that stopped by! How to Make "Real" Miniature Fall Leaves

A number of customers have come into the shop asking if we carry miniature fall leaves for their miniature gardens. So, I searched and searched and wasn't quite satisfied with what I found. I decided to make my own. I purchased a tiny leaf punch and set out to find the right material for leaves. I didn't want paper because it would dissolve the minute the leaves came into contact with water. I tried to punch silk but the ends frayed. Then I got the idea to use real leaves. Success! The punch cut through the leaves like butter! I gathered leaves from all around the Geneva area. They are a bit time consuming so I will have small bags of leaves for sale at the shop for those who would rather have me do the work for them :-)

Here is what I did:

1) Gather leaves of various colors including green

2) punch leaves with a leaf shaped punch

3) Spread out in a drawer or pan to dry. I put them in a drawer so that I could shake them from side to side to get that natural curled edge. Let dry over night.

4) Enjoy!

Miniature Backyard Garden with Koi Pond

I was approached by a granddaughter of an elderly woman who was moving into a retirement home. She asked if I could make a miniature garden of her grandmother's yard back home. Her grandmother loved her home, garden and small koi pond and missed it dearly since she had moved away. As I spoke to the woman, I noticed how her face lit up just thinking of a miniature version of her beloved garden. I told her that she would need to keep the "bushes" and the "trees" trimmed and the "grass" watered. The photos that I had to work off of were not the most detailed but I think that I captured her little backyard enough for her to be able to have something that could bring her some happiness. I focused on the pond area since that is what she missed the most. All of the plants are alive except the flowers in the flower pots.

The plants on each side of the bench will bloom with tiny white flowers in the spring.

I had a lot of fun creating this jungle for the 600 pound Dinosaur created by Chef Alain Roby for the premier of the movie "Jurassic Park." Craig and I used a huge amount of moss on this project! The dinosaur is very life like and it is hard to believe that is it made of chocolate. He will be on display, along with several chocolate creations, and hand blown sugar sculptures by Chef Alain Roby, at the All Chocolate Kitchen opening Friday September 10th- Christmas at 507 South Third Street in Geneva, IL.
(between Caribou Coffee and Kernal Fabyan's Popcorn). Admission is FREE and there will be chocolate's, tarts, and more for sale. Watch Chef Alain Roby recreate his home kitchen in chocolate right before your eyes. Proceeds will go to Saving Tiny HeartsSociety.

CELEBRATED PASTRY CHEF CREATES LIFE-SIZED CHOCOLATE REPLICA OF HIS KITCHEN

Chef Alain Roby, senior corporate pastry chef for Hyatt Hotels and Resorts and the only pastry chef to hold two Guinness World Records for the “World’s Tallest Cooked Sugar Building” and “World’s Tallest Chocolate Sculpture”, announced today that he will be opening Chef Alain Roby’s All-Chocolate Kitchen in downtown Geneva, IL. The kitchen, which will be a chocolate replica of Chef’s own kitchen that was designed by Geneva’s Past Basket, will include QCCI cabinetry and high-end appliances among other items. The Chef is using Callebaut, Belgian chocolate donated by Barry Callebaut, for all his work in the kitchen.

Chef Alain Roby’s All-Chocolate Kitchen will be located at 507 South Third Street. It is a property owned and managed by Shodeen Management. Opening day is scheduled for Friday, September 10 at 6 p.m. and the kitchen will be open through December 2010. Admission is free. The store’s opening day coincides with the start of one of Geneva’s all-time favorite celebrations, The Festival of the Vines that commences on Friday, September 10 and runs through the weekend.

“This kitchen is a dream-come-true for me,” said Roby. “My passion is chocolate and my expertise leads me to the kitchen. I am truly blessed to have it all come together in this way, and am excited to share all of this with our guests.”

The All-Chocolate Kitchen also will offer guests some of Chef’s most famous desserts like pastries, cookies, giant brownies and hot chocolate. In addition, his book “Alain Roby’s American Classics – Casual and Elegant Desserts” will be on sale.

On Saturday evenings, Chef also will be creating sugar demonstrations for guests. The output of these sessions will be available for purchase.

Also in the kitchen, Chef will share the story of an organization that is very important to him, The Saving tiny Hearts Society. This charity was created by Brian and Francie Paul in honor of their son, Joshua, who was born with several heart defects in 2005. The Saving tiny Hearts Society is an entirely volunteer-based organization that was formed for the sole purpose of raising funds for congenital heart defect research. In four years, The Saving tiny Hearts team has raised more than $500,000, funded three research projects, and is releasing funds for additional projects later this year.

“The mission of The Saving tiny Hearts Society is very dear to my heart,” added Chef. “My hope is that while visitors enjoy the thrill of all that chocolate can bring, they’ll also recognize the commendable work that this charity provides to many ailing families around the world.”

About Chef Roby

For the past 20 years, Chef Roby’s work has been seen all over the world. The Guinness Book of World Records awarded him with the “World’s Tallest Cooked Sugar Building” and “World’s Tallest Chocolate Sculpture” honors. These creations took his visibility to new heights. Chef Roby is the only pastry chef to hold two Guinness World Records.

Most recently, Chef Alain was featured on the Martha Stewart Show and created a 1,350 lb. cake that was more than six feet tall, for the Tall Show. Pure Gardener Owner Craig MacLean quickly solved my tomato problem.

"It's called Blossom End Rot," he said. "Tomatoes need a lot of calcium. You should have added it when you planted, but if you work some in now, it won't cure them, but it will help prevent it." Whew! I thought I was facing complete crop failure. It's nice to walk into a store where people know more than box-back readers.

"We don't do dime store stuff," said MacLean. "We go for a better value. Everything in here, we've tried ourselves. If we don't like it, we don't sell it. And we're always trying new things so we don't get bored." MacLean and his wife Annette are members of the Seed Savers Exchange, based in Decorah, Iowa. Members share seeds from all over the world.

The Pure Gardener offers a wide variety of plant material. And I mean wide. More than 50 varieties of tomatoes. Ten to 12 types of thyme, ten varieties of basil, a pepper plant with variegated leaves -- and fruit!

"It's called a fish pepper. Goes well with fish or shellfish. Or the Melrose pepper, brought over by the Italians who settled Melrose Park. That's great for grilling. We can recommend types of tomatoes based on whatever people want to use them for: flavor, sauces, slicing. The pink varieties from Eastern Europe have a lot of flavor."

The Pure Gardener opened in November 2006. The MacLeans were formerly managers at the old Geneva Greenhouse, a longtime fixture for area gardeners. When the greenhouse property sold, the MacLeans looked around and found the former Pure Oil Station site was available.

"It's not a greenhouse so we couldn't call it that. My wife came up with the name The Pure Gardener. She makes it beautiful. I just unload trucks. These miniature gardens are her work. They're like a doll house with living plants. People are going nuts for these."

Pure Gardener sells the Dr. Earth organic and pro-biotic line of fertilizers. "No miracle is needed," said MacLean. "We're getting rave reviews from our customers on this."

The MacLeans and staff keep busy year round. "We do commercial work for restaurants as well as residential. We do all the grounds at Dotson Place. From November to about December 10, it's a blur around here. Everybody wants their winter outdoor planters and wreaths at the same time. We get branches from all over the country 24 hours after they're cut."

The Pure Gardener sells herbs, heirloom vegetables and flowers, the original evergreen reindeer, fresh greens, custom containers, hanging baskets, mums, one-in-a-lifetime quality tools, worm composters, Earth Boxes, sprout seeds and supplies, organics, artisan soaps and lotions, local art and unique gifts.

It's hard to walk out of The Pure Gardener without buying something.

Backyard Chickens in Geneva- Are we getting closer?

Ahhhhhh, the backyard urban chicken saga continues. On our North side, St. Charles is enjoying the benefits of these wonderful little creatures that provide fresh eggs daily, free garden fertilizer, excellent insect control, and friendly companionship that I remember as a young girl. And now Batavia throws the chicken back on the "table". The city is considering allowing chickens back into the community. They were outlawed in 1991. Although, those of us that are in certain circles know many chickens are now living in Batavia as I type this post.

There are several chicken coops in downtown Geneva left over from the good old days. Take a walk around and you may spot a few.
It is a sure bet that Batavia will approve chickens. Then Geneva will be in the middle of two cities, chicken-less. Will we be the last to get with the program?

We teach embryology in kindergarten. Baby chicks are counted, fed, held, etc. Indoors in the classroom in every suburban school. They don't interrupt classes, or attract rodents, nor do they stink up the place. That is about the extent of what most children see of a live chicken. Then "poof" they are gone. A pet chicken is harmless and shouldn't be outlawed.

Chickens are popping up everywhere across cities along side family gardens as more and more people are becoming aware of how the food we put on our table is seriously effecting our health and our environment. Not to mention how these beautiful birds are grossly mistreated in huge factory "chicken coops".

It is just a fear of the unknown that keeps chickens at bay. Rumors that a few backyard chickens will put local chicken farms out of business. That foxes, coyotes, and rats will move into our neighborhoods. Chicken poop will stink up the neighborhoods. All unfounded claims.

Chickens are quieter than dogs, they eat tons of bugs- think about those pesky mosquitos and the dreaded Japanese Beetle! They will eat your kitchen vegetable scraps, provide free fertilizer, and healthy eggs right in your own backyard- alongside finches, robins, and cardinals.

I just started transforming my white birch tree into a fairy tree and I believe that they have already moved in. There is much to do. Moss must be grown, sticks need to be gathered, and flowers need to be sown. But for now, I think that they are quite pleased to have such a fine white birch tree chosen for them.

More room is needed already so, I will have to put an addition in. More photos will be forthcoming.

This gnome was spotted under a rather large mushroom. He has quite a large pot collection started.

There appears to be a neat and tidy one among the bunch.

Artist Esther Roby - and a good friend of mine- painted this beautiful rain barrel for The PURE Gardener. Our shop is happily nestled in the tree branches. The fairy is Emily, my daughter. The detail is amazing! There are tea cups, butterflies, lady bugs ( for good luck ) and even a strawberry cake. When Esther and Alain (her husband) brought it to our shop, today, it was covered with a blanket. When Alain removed it, we were speechless. It is absolutely beautiful. I am ready to move in :-)

I must say that I never expected the response that I have received with my miniature fairy gardens, plants, and supplies. There is something about it that just makes people smile. Grandmothers are bringing their grandchildren into the shop to collaborate on their little creations. One family stopped in to notify us that they were picking up Nana from the airport so that she can help design their fairy garden. She was going to help the young daughter pick out accessories and the brother was going to be the architect. Husbands and wives are choosing miniature topiary trees and lawn furniture to furnish their tiny plots of land. Grown woman ( including myself as you might be able to tell by my transformation in the photo above ) are choosing tea sets and tiny cakes to set their garden tables.

I have made several indoor and outdoor fairy gardens and each is unique. They seem to take on a life of their own. They are something that we create that represents a get away. A peaceful place away from everyday life. A fantasy. It is gardening in miniature. A dwarf curry plant turns into a bush. A rosemary topiary becomes a large tree to sit under in your ornate lounge chair and a few snips are an excellent addition to tonight's dinner. Moss is a lush green carpeted floor and is easy to keep alive with a few sprays of water. Fairy vine climbs an ornate arbor and compliments tiny succulents in clay urns.

What ever the reason these tiny gardens are attracting so much attention doesn't really matter. All that is important is that they bring joy to all that look upon them.

Grow your own veggies in your windowsill without soil. The latest vertical gardening that is "growing by leaps and bounds" in New York.

I think that this will make an excellent Winter project for Craig and I after the season slows down!

".... The simplest window farm system is a column of upside-down water bottles connected to one another. Plants grow out of holes cut into the sides. An air pump is used to circulate liquid nutrients that trickle down from the top of the column and make their way to the plant roots.

Window farms have been used to grow strawberries, cherry tomatoes and peppers. Riley's favorite is bok choi.

"Buttercrunch lettuce grows great and lots of herbs," Nayak says. "Anything leafy and green, essentially. You can't grow carrots. I mean, you can't grow root vegetables. Potatoes, garlic. Those things don't work."..... source NPR

Grow your Own Strawberries!

Strawberries have arrived at The PURE Gardener!

Grow them in hanging baskets!

They can be grown alone or along with complementing flowers

Grow them in the ground

Grow them in a strawberry pot

Grow them in a mossed hanging basket

Grow them in a gutter

Nothing compares to a vine-ripened strawberry that has been seasoned to perfection in the early summer sunshine. They are beautiful and delicious! They can grow in any soil but will produce better in rich, organic soil with a little added sand. They can grow in as little as 6 hours of sun but, will grow more fruit in more sun. They are a perennial plant but must be grown in the ground or a large container-like a whisky barrel-in order to survive the winter. Although, some gardeners have success overwintering in smaller containers. Make sure to water well when they are producing fruit but do not let stand in soggy soil. They reproduce by sending out shoots. The shoots can be allowed to root or a new baby plant can be propagated and moved to another location. One cup (144 g) of strawberries contains approximately 45 calories (188 kJ) and is an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids. Start a strawberry patch today and enjoy the fruits of your labor tomorrow!

I am in love with these mini topiaries and I am sure that you will be too! They are great to use as a tree in a miniature/ fairy garden or are wonderful sitting on a table near your favorite spot. They are easy to care for. We fertilize them every 2 weeks with organic fertilizer. They don't like to dry out and need a trim every once in a while to keep their shape. The scented geraniums and herb topiaries smell wonderful!
